Have you ever thought traveling to Australia? Want to learn common aussie slang? So let’s take a look at some slang:

“G’day Mate!”

G’day, means ‘hello’ (short for ‘good day’) and mate means ‘friend’!

“Arvo”

This comes from the word “afternoon.” If you say the word afternoon in your head, you will find that it also has 3 syllables! 2 syllables is better, quicker, easier…

“Good on ya, mate!”

Short for “good on you”. Way to show approval (like “good job”) and express heartfelt congratulations. Also used to replace expressions like “really?”, “oh yeah” etc. in casual conversation. It can also be used sarcastically, ie. when you want to be a little mean, but don’t want to actually utter a mean word. Take a look at some examples:

Positive: “Good on ya, mate. You really aced that exam!”

Sarcastic: “You broke a surf board again. Good on ya, mate.”

“Bloody”:

This rather uncomely expression is mostly used as an exclamation of surprise. It’s proper translation is “very,” and can be used in happy sentences like “This post about Aussie Slangs is bloody awesome!” or less happy ones such as “Bloody hell” or (our favorite) “You’re a bloody idiot.” Be cautious with this one.
